Pastor's Blog - 2008/07/05
I had never listened to the man, and from the brief news release, I wouldn’t want to. But last week I couldn’t dismiss the headline from my mind: “George Carlin mourned as counterculture hero.” He is noted for pushing the limits of offensive language on the airwaves, challenging the norm, and questioning religious hypocrisy. But it is those two words in the headline…”counterculture hero” that within Christian genre seem to be an oxymoron. I was startled when I read that you can be countercultural and be a hero. We speak of being connected or relevant with our culture, while the world celebrates someone countercultural.
We have been engrossed within the Christian church with being able to communicate the gospel in a digestible way for our community. We are good stewards of the gospel to be occupied with such. But we have been sold “two for the price of one.” While engaged in understanding how to do this, the devil whispered to someone that if the message were cultural, it would be relevant. The truth is that the gospel is not even congruous with the thinking of most Christians, much less those who distance themselves the community of faith.
The task remains to communicate the gospel to this generation while daring to be a Daniel, standing alone, and in the end being a counterculture hero.
