Pastor's Blog - 06/07/2008

Every year 250,000+ new teachers get hired in the United States.  For the past several months I have been part of the process of hiring just two teachers for our school. Although it hasn’t been a stressful task, it has been a prayerful one. How do you choose?

This week the choices in the political scene were narrowed down, as Obama became the presumptive democratic presidential nominee. But maybe for some this doesn’t simplify the picture anymore, and they see good and bad in both party nominees.  How do you choose?

And I haven’t even addressed the personal or family decisions that sometimes cause mental gridlock.  How do you choose?

But praise God for that familiar promise:  “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally…” (James 1:5)  The question in my mind then became, “How does this work?”

The answer can be seen in the illustrious wise man of the Bible:  Solomon.  He asked for understanding (1 Kings 3:9); then, in the same chapter, a situation arose wherein he had to use it.  There is no record of a blue light or movement from the hand of God. But what happens is Solomon acts, believing God has given him wisdom.

We mock God when we ask for wisdom, claiming His promises, and then fail to act.  Praying for wisdom is dangerous in that it requires action; but it’s safe in that God will give it.
