Paul Harvey
, the much appreciated radio broadcaster, died last Saturday at the age of 90, making him just as old as commercial radio itself.  Paul Harvey coined words such as “guesstimate”, “Reaganomics”, and “skyjacker” and his unique delivery style was marked with pauses that defied the “rules” of broadcasting. Harvey’s day began at 3:30 in the morning with a bowl of oatmeal, then he would forage through the news wires, searching out stories for his program.

Joe Holley, writing for The Washington Post, noted Harvey’s staccato delivery and his “authoritative baritone voice” as features that attracted the millions of listeners. Holley is right, but I see something more that held the interest of so many:  nothing in life for Paul Harvey was boring and the future was always exciting. Even while opposing the Vietnam War, he was excited about the future of his country. He claimed he would always be a “salesman” for the United States of America.

Learning from Paul Harvey, besides getting up at 3:30 a.m. and eating oatmeal, I believe we have a future that is worth being excited about.  God promised He would never destroy us from the earth again until He had come back for His own.

Our teaching series beginning today, is going to help us understand what is going on, and what we have to be excited about.  Jesus, in Matthew 24, gives it to us straight.  But this “straight talk” includes the guarantee that while coming on a cloud, He will “send out his angels to the four corners of the earth, and they will gather his chosen people from one end of the world to the other.” (Matthew 24:31)
